Frequently Asked Questions.
"Spray foam raises a lot of questions — and you deserve real answers, not sales talk. Here's what Metro Atlanta homeowners ask us most."
The Basics
-
Spray foam is a two-part liquid mixture that expands on contact, filling every crack, gap, and cavity to create a continuous airtight seal. Unlike fiberglass or cellulose, it doesn't just fill space — it bonds to the surface and stops air from moving through it.
-
The two are technically defined by density: foam at 1.5 lb per cubic foot or greater is classified as closed-cell; anything lighter is open-cell.
Closed-cell foam has a denser, rigid structure. It offers the highest R-value per inch, acts as a vapor barrier, and adds structural strength to the area it's applied to.
Open-cell foam is softer and more flexible, with a lower material cost. It's excellent for sound dampening and air sealing, though it doesn't act as a vapor barrier the way closed-cell does.
We will discuss and recommend the right one for your home based on your specific attic, climate exposure, and goals — not a one-size-fits-all answer.
-
The two liquid components react and expand within seconds of contact, forming a solid foam that fills cracks and cavities completely. Once cured, it creates a continuous air barrier that stops the drafts and energy loss that loose-fill insulation can't.
Performance & Durability
-
Closed-cell foam is highly stable and holds its R-value for the life of the home. There can be a very small amount of settling as the foam fully stabilizes shortly after installation, but this is minor and expected — nothing like the ongoing R-value loss you see with fiberglass or cellulose over 10–20 years.
-
Properly installed spray foam is designed to perform for the life of the structure. It doesn't sag, settle, or compress the way traditional insulation does over time.
-
Tightening your home's envelope can change how your HVAC system performs — often for the better, since it no longer has to work as hard to compensate for air leaks. In some older, leaky homes, the HVAC system was originally oversized to compensate for that leakage. We'll discuss this during your inspection and can advise if an HVAC tune-up or evaluation makes sense after your retrofit.
-
Yes. Closed-cell foam adds rigidity and can meaningfully increase the racking strength of walls and roof decks, helping the structure better resist wind and structural stress.
-
Open-cell foam is genuinely effective at dampening sound and is a popular choice for interior walls, media rooms, and sound-sensitive spaces. Closed-cell foam, while excellent for thermal and moisture performance, is denser and doesn't perform as well specifically for soundproofing.
Application & Compatibility
-
In most retrofit situations, yes — especially if the existing insulation is damp, compressed, or has its own vapor barrier that would conflict with the new foam. We always assess this during your free inspection and explain exactly what your home needs.
-
Yes, foam can be sprayed directly around standard electrical wiring. Certain fixtures, like recessed lighting, may need a small clearance from the foam for proper airflow and cooling — we account for this during installation.
-
It depends on the equipment. Newer high-efficiency, sealed-combustion units typically don't require additional make-up air. Older units with standard metal venting may need it. We evaluate your specific equipment during the inspection and make sure combustion safety is addressed before any work begins.
-
Spray foam bonds to most common building surfaces — wood, masonry, metal, and more. Generally, if a surface can be painted without a specialty primer, foam will adhere to it properly.
Safety & Health
-
Yes. Once fully cured — typically within 24 hours — spray foam is inert and non-toxic. During application, the area should not be occupied, and our crew wears proper respiratory protection. We walk you through full safety guidance before every job.
-
Off-gassing refers to fumes released during the brief chemical reaction as the two components combine and expand. This happens for only a matter of seconds during application — it is not an ongoing process after the foam cures.
-
It's a fair question, and the building science answer is "seal tight, and ventilate right." A properly sealed home should be paired with intentional fresh-air ventilation — like an energy recovery ventilator (ERV) or a whole-home dehumidifier with fresh air intake — especially on larger full-envelope projects. We evaluate this on every job and can advise whether your home would benefit from added ventilation after a retrofit.
-
No. Spray foam has no nutritional value, so it doesn't create a food source for pests, mold, or bacteria the way old, moisture-trapping insulation can.Item description
-
INo. Modern spray foam is a completely different chemical formulation than older insulation products that historically used formaldehyde. Ask us about the specific product data sheet for your job if you'd like the full technical breakdown.tem description
Cost, Financing & Getting Started
-
Cost depends on your home's size, current insulation condition, and attic accessibility. We provide an exact, itemized quote after your free thermal camera inspection — no guessing, no surprises.
-
Yes. Federal tax credits for energy efficiency home improvements are available under the Inflation Reduction Act, and Georgia Power offers rebates for qualifying insulation upgrades. We can provide documentation of completed work to support your rebate or tax credit filing.
We utilize Joist for our estimating and Invoicing and contained on each estimate and Invoice or our partnership with Acor’s Financing Partners and a QR Code and web links so you can explore multiple financing options and no credit pulls will be done during your review process, only after you have decided to apply for one of the financing options. Then of course a hard credit check will take place.
Ask us about financing options during your free inspection and have material we can leave with you for further exploration if you so desire.
-
Book a site visit for your free energy audit / thermal camera inspection where we will share the heat lose images, take measurements and photos, prepare your estimate and send it to you for review. From there an installation date will be scheduled.
